Biliteracy: Correction Exercises

Starting this week, the students will have the chance to become an English teacher!

On the whiteboard, Shireen writes out a paragraph - either her own or from a book - with incorrect punctuation and grammar. Some will also have some spelling mistakes, and one or two sentences will have grammatically incorrect word order. Next, the students will copy as it is onto their journal notebook and use their red pencil to make some corrections. Is it correct to say, "I will go school because today Monday."? This method is called, "Correction Exercises." It allows students to learn how to proofread and edit sentences or paragraphs, and this skill will help them become better writers overtime. We will be continuing to do this exercise throughout the year.

Also, this week's theme is on cursive handwriting. We're compiling a cursive writing book whilst practicing the first half of the alphabet letters during class. They'll be able to take this book home to do handwriting practice at their own pace and have some fun spelling out words (and their name!).

Wrapping Up the First Reading Strategy

Earlier this week, we had a wrap up lesson for our first reading strategy Self-Monitoring. Here I wrote a short summary of what we covered for the past four weeks.

3 Questions
When reading, always pause and ask yourself the following questions to be aware of your reading behaviors:
Does it look right?
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?

It is pretty typical for early readers to make errors in decoding. The 3 questions above are meant to help early readers analyze their reading behaviors (How they tend to read), catch their own errors, and make self-corrections.Their errors are mainly divided into three categories: Visual, Structure, and Meaning.

Visual: Readers use the visual features of print – the letters and words – to read. They connect these features to phonetic information that exists in their heads.
(Text) It was a hot day. (Reader) "It was a hit day."

Structure: Readers often substitute nouns for nouns or verbs for verbs, indicating an awareness of the structure of language.
(Text) It was a hot day. (Reader) "It is a hot day."

Meaning: Readers often make substitutions that indicate they are thinking about meaning of the text.
(Text) ... in cold environments. (Reader) "... in cool environments."

Here is one of the examples of worksheets that the students did.

2) 7 Tricks
When reading, use the following tricks to conquer the difficult words and stories.

Eagle eye
Lips the fish
Stretchy snake
Chunky monkey
Trying lion
Skippy frog
Flippy dolphin

Since we have already covered this in the meeting, I won't go into details.

3) 5 Marks
When reading, always pause and make a comment on what you are reading.
♡ "I love this part!"
? "This part is confusing."
! "Wow, I'm surprised by this part."
LOL "This part is funny!"
✳ "This part is important to remember."

These five marks are meant to help early readers self-monitor their comprehension. At first, our students were making comments on the pictures of their books but gradually, they learned to make comments on what they were reading.

Here's one of the students' work.

Now we have moved on to our next reading strategy but we hope they will always remember this strategy and be ready to use it.
