K5 insight

Welcome to an insight into the class life of K5’s Outer Space week!

During Outer Space week, K5 were lucky enough to take a short day trip to the planetarium, situated at the top of the Benesse Tower at Tama Center (Well, not at the very top… that space was reserved for a helicopter pad!).

Inside the planetarium, the children were seated and then reclined in their chairs. The dome sphere above their heads lit up with a constellation of stars and then a short film about the moon began with a tiger called Shimajiro exploring space facts with his friends. K5 learned along with Shimajiro that the distance from Earth to the moon is about 30 moons away and that the craters on the moon can have many visual interpretations of its shape, such as crabs, a rabbit mashing mocha or a lady’s head! They also found out the easiest way to find the big dipper star constellation in the night sky… I hope they will try for themselves one night outside!

The whole trip inspired K5 to learn more about the cycle of the moon around Earth, and requested that they learn more about it back at school the following day! It might have just been the children were affected by that day’s full moon phase, but it was a request that I happily accepted, as self-directed learning is a wonderful trait for students to have!

Setsubun

SETSUBUN

Last Friday was super exciting, though super scary for some of us.
Demons would be coming to school!

When we had all gathered in the big room, Kynan’s Mom explained how Setsubun came about and how Japanese people celebrate it.
Eri’s and Yuika’s Moms told us the Setsubun story in Japanese.
After the story it was craft time.

Ryusei’s Mom explained how the mask was to be assembled.
Once we had all found our tables, we started right away.
Many Moms and a Dad had come to volunteer and help us to make the masks.
It was fun.

K4 and K5 cut their own features, so they could make their masks even more impressive.
So far it wasn’t scary at all.
After the group photos we all sat down on one side of the classroom.
The Moms and Dad handed out roasted soya beans.
That was our ammo to fence off the demons.
Then it happened! The demons came!
They were swaying big clubs, one even a knobbed club! We threw our beans for dear life, while shouting,
“Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons out! Good luck in!).
We were stronger than the demons and they left empty-handed.
No one got snatched, we were all safe.
Now we hope lots of good luck will come this year.

K3 Around the World week

Theme: Around the World
Song: Hello to all the children of the world https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYjGy_ZUG8

Sorry for the late update! We got to learn about some awesome countries like Czech, France, Philippines, USA and many more. We made our own traveling bags and pretended to be on the plane. The kids had a lot of fun using their pretend passports and tickets, listening to the flight announcements, and asking for the meals and drink.

Here are the sound effect we used in our class:
