K5 This week

Welcome to an insight into the daily class life of K5!

Sight words can be tricky.
A lot of English words do not spell phonetically and can often confuse a reader if they are not familiar that new word.
Today, I’m going to show you what approach we are taking to learn our sight words, along with high frequency words.

Each member in K5 carries a booklet containing 100 words and every week we will tackle one page with ten printed word through different activities.

First is simple memorization.
Using their “PRF” (Pointing Reading Finger) the children will focus on the word while repeating it aloud in succession.
It may be read forwards, backwards, or skipped around.
Then I may mispronounce some words and have the children correct me. They enjoy this aspect immensely!

Another is word recognition.
A sentence may be written on the board and students are asked to circle the sight or high frequency words they recognize.
They build so much confidence completing this task and enjoy encouraging others to completion too.

Two activities on dictation are used.
One simply is where the word is announced and the children will attempt to write the word on their personal whiteboard with no pressure to be correct.
The other involves dictating a simple sentence using the words the children learned that week into their journals.
They joy they feel when they realize they can spell out these words is further increased when they are able to read back the sentence they wrote!

Of course, we play games during these times to make learning these words enjoyable!
One such game is KABOOM!!, where the children will pull a stick out of a cup and read the word.
The more they read, the more sticks they can keep… until someone pulls out a KABOOM stick and everyone loses their words!
The children look forward to this game very often and is a cause for celebration.

Finally by the end of the week, we have a small test! And if the children can read all 10 words, they receive a great job sticker! They will always have a chance to repeat efforts if that week doesn’t come through easily.
We will keep at this till the end of the school year, the children have demonstrated that they have responded with desire to succeed with these methods with aplomb!

The song of choice was The Ants go Marching In by Super Simple Songs. This song helped the children recognize numbers 1-10

For craft, we made fuzzy caterpillars on leaves! Ladybugs drew on their leaves to represent different colors of leaves and then chose what color caterpillars they’d like to have using pom poms.
